While the advantages of technology allow us great benefits and efficiencies in our lives, they can also bring dangerous security risks. <\/div>\n\t\t\t  \n\t\t\t  \t<hr style=\"margin-bottom: 5rem;\">\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\n<p>Computer-related crimes are on the rise, targeting consumers and businesses alike. Safeguarding our personal and financial information from cyber threats is extremely important, especially when it comes to identity theft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of us have protections in place, such as firewall security and anti-malware software, to try and prevent scammers from targeting our computers and gaining unauthorized access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But even the best protections can fail against a cyber attack. Information that can be compromised in an attack may include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Usernames and passwords<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Email addresses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Phone Numbers and Home Addresses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Birthdays<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Social Security Numbers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Driver\u2019s License Numbers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Credit Card or Debit Card Numbers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bank Account Information<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What can individuals and businesses do to reduce the impact of a data breach?&nbsp; The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends following the steps below.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-817a25e\" type=\"1\">\n<li>Check for any unusual activity on all your accounts.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check your statements regularly for potentially fraudulent activity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Report any unusual activity right away.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block stk-1dd9998\" data-block-id=\"1dd9998\"><style>.stk-1dd9998 It<\/strong><\/h4><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you\u2019re a victim of identity theft, file a police report and an Identity Theft Report with the Federal Trade Commission at IdentityTheft.gov<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This establishes a legal record of theft and will help in case someone does attempt to use your social security number to commit fraud.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block stk-75ca4f1\" data-block-id=\"75ca4f1\"><style>.stk-75ca4f1 .stk-block-heading__text{color:var(--stk-global-color-63884,#fbad18) !important}<\/style><h4 class=\"stk-block-heading__text has-text-color has-stk-global-color-63884-color\"><strong>3) Place a Fraud Alert on Credit Reports<\/strong><\/h4><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Place a fraud alert by contacting any one of the three credit bureaus \u2013 Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You don\u2019t need to contact all three.&nbsp; The credit bureau you reached out to must tell the other two you have placed a fraud alert on your credit report.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A fraud alert requires potential creditors to contact you, the consumer, to obtain permission to open new accounts or lines of credit.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When you place a fraud alert, you can get a free copy of your credit report from each of the three credit bureaus.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A fraud alert lasts for one year, after which time you can renew it.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Extended fraud alerts are available, but only if you\u2019ve had your identity stolen, have filed a police report and completed an FTC identity theft report at IdentityTheft.gov<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When you place an extended fraud alert, you are allowed a free credit report from each of the credit bureaus twice within one year from the time you placed the alert.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An extended fraud alert lasts seven years.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The cost is free for both types of fraud alerts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block stk-e873101\" data-block-id=\"e873101\"><style>.stk-e873101 .stk-block-heading__text{color:var(--stk-global-color-63884,#fbad18) !important}<\/style><h4 class=\"stk-block-heading__text has-text-color has-stk-global-color-63884-color\"><strong>4) Place a Credit Freeze on Credit Reports<\/strong><\/h4><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A credit freeze restricts access to your account, so that you, or others, won\u2019t be able to open new accounts in your name while the freeze is in place.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can temporarily lift the credit freeze if circumstances arise where you need to apply for credit.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To place a credit freeze, you must contact each of the three credit bureaus, Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block stk-cc17251\" data-block-id=\"cc17251\"><style>.stk-cc17251 .stk-block-heading__text{color:var(--stk-global-color-63884,#fbad18) !important}<\/style><h4 class=\"stk-block-heading__text has-text-color has-stk-global-color-63884-color\"><strong>5) Check Your Credit Report Annually<\/strong><\/h4><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Consumers are entitled by law to a free credit report from each of the credit bureaus once per year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Review your reports annually to ensure all your credit information is accurate and up to date.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The credit bureaus offer a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.annualcreditreport.com\/index.action\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">centralized, authorized website<\/a> to order free credit reports, or you can call 1-877-322-8228.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-56d6b0f\" data-block-id=\"56d6b0f\"><style>.stk-56d6b0f{height:25px Operations<\/strong><\/h4><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Secure physical areas potentially related to the breach.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Closely monitor all entry and exit points.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Secure and lock these areas, restrict access, and change access codes if needed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Update credentials and passwords for authorized users.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If a hacker stole credentials, put new ones in place, even if the hacker\u2019s tools have been removed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mobilize your internal breach response team to prevent additional data loss.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Depending on the size and nature of your company, your breach response team may include forensics, legal, information security, information technology, operations, human resources, and management.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block stk-0cddad0\" data-block-id=\"0cddad0\"><style>.stk-0cddad0 Vulnerabilities<\/strong><\/h4><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Take affected equipment offline immediately.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check with external service providers to ensure they were not compromised.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Work with forensics experts:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Determine who had access to the data at the time of the breach.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Verify the type of information compromised and the number of people impacted.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block stk-281b042\" reaches all impacted parties.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This includes employees, customers, investors, business partners and stakeholders.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t withhold key details about the breach that may help consumers protect themselves.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t publicly share information that might put consumers at further risk.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This includes your local police department.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Report your situation and the potential risk for identity theft<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The sooner local law enforcement is made aware of a breach, the more effective they can be to assist.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For further assistance investigating information compromises, contact the
